Farah PIC1

Why Leading the Movement?

Farah's journey began with a desire to reconnect with her own identity after dedicated years raising her three children. Through her long-standing involvement with Opening Boundaries, she leveraged sport to address social issues such as gender inequality and access barrier, most notably by establishing a highly successful women's swimming project in the West Midlands.

In 2022, Farah joined the Board of Active Black Country, despite lacking formal corporate experiences. Through her coaching, she developed a confident, empathetic leadership style and now serves as a mentor, advocating for inclusion and striving for lasting community impact.

Farah chose to participate in Leading the Movement for deeply personal reasons related to her confidence and self-belief. Although she was already leading projects on strategic boards, she struggled with imposter syndrome, public speaking and a sense of belonging in professional and leadership spaces, especially after spending a long time out of paid employment to raise her children.

Coaching appealed to her as a way to address these internal barriers, build her confidence and develop her communication skills, ultimately helping her see herself as a leader.

"I use sports as a platform to talk about social issues, whether it's knife crime, gender inequality or other barriers - because the sense of community and achievement from helping others makes it so rewarding."

  • Coaching experience

Farah's experience as a coachee was transformative. She described her relationship with her coach as genuine and built on trust, allowing her to openly discuss her fears and self-doubt. The experience helped her recognise her existing leadership qualities and appreciate her empathetic style.

Farah identified the benefits of her coaching journey:

    • Coaching provided Farah with a safe and supportive space.
    • Through coaching, she learned practical techniques such as slowing down her speech, pausing to think more clearly, preparing for difficult conversations and influencing discussions more effectively.
    • Coaching helped Farah redefine her understanding of leadership - extending beyond corporate titles to include the community work she was already engaged in.
    • The programme boosted her confidence, helped her overcome imposter syndrome somewhat, build self-belief and recognise her own value as a leader, enabling her to take on new challenges such as applying for Board roles.

"[My coach] helped me see the leader in myself long before I could see it on my own. Her belief in me gave me the confidence to step into spaces I once felt I didn't belong, and her guidance has changed the way I approach leadership, conversations and my own self-worth."

  • Mentoring experience

Farah's mentoring experience has been fulfilling, shaped by her journey of personal growth. By sharing her challenges, she creates a safe space for meaningful conversations, allowing mentees to explore their fears without judgement.

Farah views vulnerability as a strength that promotes growth. Through mentoring, she expands networks and creates opportunities in sports and leadership, focusing on connection, empowerment and helping others recognise their potential.

Farah's mentoring experience has supported her to:

    • Deepen her sense of purpose.
    • Expand her professional network.
    • Embrace opportunity and lead authentically.
    • Create a lasting impact both for herself and for the communities she serves.

"I don't mentor from a place of having all the answers; I mentor from a place of honesty, empathy and shared learning. By being open about my own fears and challenges, I provide my mentees the same space to do the same, and that's where real growth begins."

Practical application

Farah effectively applied her coaching skills during a challenging conversation. She prepared key points in advance, slowed down her speech and focused on guiding the conversation instead of reacting emotionally. A a result, the discussion was calm, structured and highly productive, leading to a positive outcome. Afterwards, Farah reflected that this experience demonstrated the effectiveness of coaching tools when used with preparation and intention.

Impacts and reflections

"The programme had a lasting impact on me as a leader by helping me recognise the type of leader I aspire to be: one who leads with empathy, clarity and empowerment. It clarified my vision of being an empathetic, people-focused leader. Additionally, it provided me with the tools to align my actions with my values and inspire my team to collaboratively change our goals."

Farah's advice to others who want to lead more inclusively or address inequalities in their work is to lead with curiosity, empathy and courage. Listen to diverse voices, challenge assumptions and create spaces where everyone feels values. Small, consistent actions can build an inclusive culture and drive meaningful change against inequality.
